Finishing & Door Protection Instructions
Introduction
Timber is a naturally grown product and is subject to change due to variations in humidity and temperature resulting in minor swelling and shrinking. This is not a defect but a natural characteristic of timber. A warp in the plane of the door will only be considered as a defect if it exceeds a quater of an inch when measuring a deviation from a straight edge on the suspected concave surface of the door in its installed position. Doors should be stored, handled and installed in accordance with the BS Code of practice CP151.
Storage
Doors must be stored flat and level on a minimum of 3 equally spaced bearers in a dry and clean location. Doors should never be stored in an area which is subjecterd to extremes in temperature, the building should be well ventilated and not recently plastered. Special care should be taken in a centrally heated or air-conditioned building where moisture content should build up.
Precautions
It is recommended that doors are not stored in freshly plastered locations until the plaster is completely dry and there is no risk in sudden change of humidity. This will avaoid moisture penetration which can lead to excessive warping of internal doors. Excessive moisture intake is the most common cause for failure.
Hanging
Prior to hanging this door, inspect for damage and do not proceed to work on the door if any noticeable damage or defect is evident. if this door is to be reduced in size, an equal amount of timber should be cut down from either side/top and bottom ( please note that this must never exceed 6mm in total, i.e 3mm each side). All lock or handle cavities should be kept to a minimum size and sited away from the mid-rail joint.
Note this door is intenesws for internal use only.
Sealing
Once the door has acclimatised to its surroundings it is essential that the door is fully sealed with a suitable base sealer on both faces and four edges and any cut-outs (locks etc), immediately after the wrapping is removed. Prior to priming and sealing thoroughly sand all flat surfaces with a 180 grift paper paying special attention to any handling marks and variations caused by exposure and ensure the surface is dust free. A good water repellent wood protective treatment should be used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Failure to follow the above will invalidate most claims for excessive movement.
Finishing
For added durability micro-porous wood stains and paints are recommended, usually three top coats of a proprietary branded lacquer or paint are satisfactory but we strongly recommend you treat this door in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
Maintanance
Regular maintance of this door should be made to prevent breakdown of the wood finish and to protect the timber from deterioration.
Conditions of Sale
The manufacturer will not be held responsible for any incidental work or expenses as a result of bad storage/handling, incorrect fitting/finishing or doors exposed to excessive changes in atmospheric conditions.
In the event of this door being proven to have manufacturing defect wherein replacement is needed, the sellers liability shall underno circumstances exceed the price of the defective door.
