Often referred to as the “King of Trees” the heartwood wood from American Black Cherry tree is a beautiful warm red colour which will gradually darken with age to a deep rich colour. The lighter colored Sapwood is slightly red to creamy orange in colour.
The timber has a tight grain and machines and finished very well. Again, like Maple it is a relatively hydroscopic wood with an open cell structure and it reacts and expands quite considerably when it comes into contact with moisture and humidity.
In comparison to species such as Maple and Oak, Cherry is relatively soft hardwood and will mark and score. Not recommended for use in a high traffic area such as sports halls or dance studios.
The Bark of the cherry Tree is used to flavor soft drinks such as “Cherry Cola” and is also used in the flavoring of confectionary items and to add flavor and colour in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals
